Detailed 7-Day Rwanda Gorillas & Migration Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival and Arusha city tour
Meet your driver-guide at the airport or lodge for a short briefing about the safari. You will be served a glass of juice and enjoy lunch afterward.
Take a guided tour of Arusha city, visiting the local museum, markets, and other interesting places recommended by your guide. After exploring the city, transfer to your hotel for refreshment, dinner, and rest.
Day 2: Drive to Serengeti National Park – evening game drive
After breakfast, drive for about 4 to 5 hours to Serengeti National Park, one of Africa’s finest wildlife destinations. The drive offers great scenery, stories, and fun along the way.
Arrive in the afternoon for lunch, followed by an evening game drive. You will see animals such as lions, leopards, zebras, cheetahs, and wildebeests. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Witness the migration – evening cultural encounter
Leave the lodge early to catch the morning wildlife activity. You may see lions, leopards, cheetahs, rhinos, buffaloes, zebras, giraffes, and many birds such as flamingos and ostriches.
Enjoy a bush breakfast in the wild, then return to the lodge for lunch and relaxation. In the evening, visit a Maasai village for a cultural experience. Spend time with the Maasai people, listening to their stories and enjoying their songs and dances. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4: Fly to Kigali city, Rwanda
After breakfast, fly from Tanzania to Kigali, Rwanda, one of the cleanest cities in Africa. You may also choose to travel by road if you prefer.
On arrival in Kigali, a company representative will meet and brief you before transferring you to your lodge for dinner and overnight. If you wish, you can explore Kigali’s nightlife with your driver-guide before resting.
Day 5: Kigali city tour and transfer to Volcanoes National Park
After breakfast, enjoy a city tour of Kigali. Visit the local markets to buy souvenirs and explore the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where over 250,000 people were laid to rest after the 1994 genocide. This visit provides insight into Rwanda’s history and the importance of peace.
After lunch, drive for about 2 to 4 hours to Volcanoes National Park, home to the endangered mountain gorillas. Arrive in the evening, check in at your lodge, have dinner, and rest for the night.
Day 6: Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park
After breakfast, drive to the park headquarters for a briefing about gorilla trekking. You will be assigned a gorilla family to track and given information on the rules and safety measures.
Enter the forest with your ranger guide to search for the gorillas. Along the way, you may see other primates, birds, and forest vegetation. The trek can take 1 to 4 hours, depending on where the gorillas are.
Once you find them, spend one full hour observing and taking photos. Afterward, return to the lodge for lunch and relaxation. In the evening, you can visit Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village for a local cultural experience. Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.
Day 7: Visit Dian Fossey graveyard and departure
After an early breakfast, take a 2 to 3-hour hike to the Dian Fossey graveyard. Dian Fossey was a famous researcher who dedicated her life to protecting mountain gorillas. You will learn about her work and legacy, which inspired the book Gorillas in the Mist.
Later, drive for about 2 to 3 hours to Kigali International Airport for your departure flight, marking the end of your safari.
