Best Trekking Sector in Bwindi Guide

Best trekking sector in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of the main homes of endangered mountain gorillas. Almost half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas live in this park, with the total population estimated at about 1,063 individuals.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has four gorilla trekking sectors. These are Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo, and Rushaga. Choosing the best sector for trekking is not easy because each one has its own strengths and limits.

Why Rushaga is Often the Best Choice

Rushaga sector is often considered the best trekking sector by many travelers. It is located in the southern part of the park and offers wide forest views that many nature lovers and photographers enjoy.

Rushaga is also known for having the highest number of habituated gorilla families in Bwindi. Because of this, gorilla permits in Rushaga are more available compared to other sectors. The large number of gorilla families also increases the chances of seeing gorillas.

Access to Rushaga Sector

Another reason Rushaga is preferred is its access routes. Travelers coming from Kigali can reach Rushaga by road in about four to five hours. From Kampala, the sector can be reached by air through Entebbe International Airport to Kisoro Airstrip or by road.

The road journey can be long and tiring, but many travelers find the route enjoyable.

Gorilla Habituation Experience

Rushaga is also the only sector in Bwindi that offers the Gorilla Habituation Experience. This activity allows visitors to spend four hours with gorillas as they get used to human presence.

Tourists join researchers and conservation teams during this process, which gives more time with the gorillas compared to the normal one hour trek.

Best Time to Visit Rushaga

Rushaga can be visited throughout the year. However, the best months are during the dry seasons from June to August and from December to February. During these months, roads are easier to use and trails are drier.

Preparation for Trekking

Although Rushaga is often called the best sector, trekking here is not easy. Visitors need a good level of fitness and should come prepared. Important items include energy snacks, insect repellent, a hat, long sleeved shirts, long trousers, sunscreen, a camera, and proper hiking shoes.

While Rushaga is a strong choice for many travelers, the best trekking sector in Bwindi still depends on your personal preference, fitness level, and travel plans.
