Detailed 4-Day Rwanda Gorillas & Monkeys Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Pick up, Kigali city tour, and transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Your tour starts with a pick-up from your hotel or Kigali International Airport. Begin with a guided tour of Kigali, one of Africa’s cleanest and most peaceful cities. Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial to learn about the country’s history, and explore local artisan shops, the Presidential Palace Museum, and other sites of interest.

After the city tour, have lunch at a local restaurant before starting your 2–3-hour drive to Volcanoes National Park. Enjoy scenic views of the countryside, mountains, and plantations along the way. On arrival, check in at your lodge, relax, and enjoy dinner as you prepare for your next day’s adventure.

Day 2: Gorilla trekking and visit to Gorilla Guardian Village

After an early breakfast, report to the park headquarters in Kinigi by 6:30 a.m. for a briefing from park officials. During the briefing, you will be assigned a gorilla family and a ranger guide. At 8:00 a.m., begin your trek through the forest to find the mountain gorillas. The trek usually takes between 2 and 6 hours, depending on where the gorillas are located.

Once you find them, you will have one hour to observe and photograph the gorillas as they feed, play, and interact. Follow your guide’s instructions at all times for safety.

After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation. Later in the afternoon, visit the Gorilla Guardian Village (Iby’Iwacu Village). This cultural center was started by former poachers who now promote wildlife conservation and local traditions. Enjoy traditional music, dance, and storytelling as you learn about Rwanda’s rich culture. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Golden monkey trekking and visit to Dian Fossey Museum

After breakfast, head back to the park for a briefing about golden monkey tracking. A ranger guide will lead you through the bamboo forest to find a habituated troop of golden monkeys. The trek may take 2–5 hours, and you will spend one hour observing these playful monkeys as they jump and feed in the trees.

Return to your lodge for lunch and a short rest. In the afternoon, visit the Dian Fossey Museum located at the Ellen DeGeneres Campus. This museum honors Dian Fossey, a great primatologist and conservationist who dedicated her life to protecting mountain gorillas.

While at the museum, explore various exhibits, a public conservation gallery, an immersive 360-degree theater, and research laboratories. Learn about her life, work, and lasting impact on gorilla conservation. After the visit, return to your lodge for dinner and relaxation.

Day 4: Drive from Musanze to Kigali and departure

After breakfast, check out of your lodge and start your journey back to Kigali. You may stop at local craft shops to buy souvenirs before heading to the airport. Depending on your flight schedule, enjoy lunch in Kigali before being dropped off at Kigali International Airport for your departure.

This marks the end of your 4-day Rwanda gorillas, golden monkeys, and Dian Fossey museum tour.
