Gorilla Trekking Nkuringo Sector Bwindi Travel Guide

For many travelers visiting Africa, Nkuringo gorilla trekking is a dream experience. Nkuringo sector stands out as the most physically demanding sector to trek in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, but it is also one of the most rewarding.

Nkuringo is difficult to trek because of its steep ridges and deep valleys. The sector lies at a high altitude of about 2,100 meters above sea level. Treks often begin with a descent into the valley, followed by a tough climb up steep slopes in search of the mountain gorillas. Because of this terrain, Nkuringo is best suited for travelers with a high level of physical fitness.

Gorilla Trekking Process in Nkuringo

A typical trekking day in Nkuringo starts early in the morning at around 7:00 am with a briefing at the park headquarters. During this briefing, park rangers explain the rules and safety guidelines. Tourists are then placed into groups of eight people, with each group assigned to one gorilla family.

Accompanied by experienced park rangers, visitors head into the forest to search for the gorillas. The trek can take anywhere from 30 minutes to six hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family. Once the gorillas are found, tourists are allowed to spend one hour observing them as they feed, rest, and interact. After the one hour ends, visitors return to the park headquarters.

Gorilla Families in Nkuringo Sector

Nkuringo sector currently has three habituated gorilla families. The Nkuringo family was formed in 2004 and is led by a dominant silverback called Rwamutwe. The name Nkuringo comes from a local word that refers to the hilly landscape of the area.

Another family is Bushaho, which separated from the Nkuringo family. This group often moves between Nkuringo and Rushaga sectors and is led by a dominant silverback named Bahati.

The third group is the Christmas family, led by a silverback called Christmas, who was born on Christmas Day. This family is known for being calm and often stays in areas that are easier to reach.
