The border is safe and well managed. There are two main official border crossings used by travelers: Katuna and Cyanika.

Main Border Crossings

Katuna is the main border crossing. It is located in Kabale District in Uganda and Gicumbi District in Rwanda. This is the busiest border and is mostly used by travelers going to Kigali or central Uganda. Katuna border is open 24 hours a day, which makes it convenient for many travelers.

Cyanika border is located in Kisoro District in Uganda and Burera District in Rwanda. It is commonly used by tourists traveling to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Volcanoes National Park for gorilla trekking. Cyanika is usually less busy than Katuna. It operates from 5:00 am Rwanda time, which is 6:00 am Uganda time, until 6:00 pm.

Crossing the border is simple if you have the correct documents. These include a valid passport, visa, yellow fever vaccination certificate, proof of accommodation, and a national ID for East African citizens.

Visa options include the East African Tourist Visa, which allows multiple entry for 90 days, a single entry visa for Uganda valid for 90 days, and a Rwanda single entry visa valid for 30 days.

Border Crossing Process

When you arrive at the border, you must present your documents to immigration officers. Bags and vehicles may also be checked. Your passport will be stamped when exiting one country and entering the other. The process usually takes between 30 minutes and one hour during quiet times, but it can take longer during busy hours. Arriving early helps reduce waiting time.
