Rushaga offers more flexibility for trekkers. The trails vary from moderate to demanding, making it suitable for both first time trekkers and experienced hikers. This sector has the highest number of habituated gorilla families in Bwindi, with more than eight groups.
Because of this, there are more permits available each day. Rushaga is a good option for travelers booking close to their travel dates or visiting during peak seasons.
Rushaga is also the only sector in Bwindi that offers the Gorilla Habituation Experience. This allows visitors to spend up to four hours with a semi habituated gorilla family, instead of the usual one hour.
Rushaga is easier to access, especially for travelers coming from Kigali in Rwanda, and can also be reached through Kisoro Airstrip.
Cultural Experiences in Both Sectors
Both Nkuringo and Rushaga are close to communities of the Bakiga and the Batwa people, who were the original forest dwellers. In Rushaga, visitors can join guided Batwa walks, cultural performances, and visits to local homes.
In Nkuringo, village walks are quieter and less commercial, offering simple interactions with local people. These visits help travelers understand how local communities live alongside the forest and gorillas.
