Dry season vs rainy season treks. Gorilla trekking during the dry season and the rainy season can feel very different. Each season affects trekking difficulty, cost, comfort, and the number of visitors in the park, especially in places like Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
Rainy Season Trekking
The rainy season in Uganda happens twice a year, from March to May and from October to November. These months receive heavy rainfall, which refreshes the forest.
One advantage of trekking during the rainy season is fewer visitors. With fewer people, gorilla permits are easier to get, and the experience feels quieter and more relaxed.
Many lodges and camps also offer discounts during the rainy season to attract travelers. This can lower the overall cost of the safari.
During this season, the forest looks fresh, which can improve photos and give the park a green look.
However, the rainy season also has challenges. Heavy rain makes the trails muddy and slippery, which can make trekking harder and requires good physical fitness.
Roads leading to the park can also become muddy and harder to use. A 4×4 safari vehicle is often needed.
Dry Season Trekking
The dry season in Uganda runs from December to February and from June to September. During this time, there is less rainfall, which makes the trails drier and easier to walk on.
Visibility is better because the skies are clearer. This can make it easier to move through the forest and reach the gorillas.
Roads leading to the park are usually dry, making access faster and more reliable.
Cost and Availability
The main disadvantage of the dry season is the high number of visitors. Demand is high, and gorilla permits sell out quickly. Travelers are advised to book permits at least three to six months in advance.
Accommodation prices and overall safari costs are also higher during the dry season, even though the cost of gorilla permits stays the same.
If comfort and easier trekking are your main priorities, the dry season is the better choice. If you prefer fewer visitors and lower costs, the rainy season is a good option.
