Detailed 5-Day Uganda Gorillas & Karisimbi Climbing Itinerary

Day 1: Pick up from Kampala and transfer to Bwindi National Park

Your driver-guide will pick you up from the airport or your hotel in Kampala. You will then begin the journey to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to almost half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas.

Stop at the Uganda Equator for a water experiment and photos before continuing to Mbarara for lunch. From there, drive through scenic countryside until you reach Bwindi in the evening. Check in at your lodge, enjoy dinner, and rest.

Day 2: Gorilla trekking and cross to Rwanda (Volcanoes National Park)

Have an early breakfast and head to the park headquarters for a briefing about gorilla trekking. The session takes about 30 minutes and covers rules, safety tips, group assignments, and porter arrangements.

Start the trek into the forest with your ranger guide. It may take between 2 to 5 hours depending on the location of the gorillas. Once you find them, you will spend one full hour observing and photographing them as they feed, play, and care for their young.

After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch, check out, and then cross the border into Rwanda. Pass through Kigali and continue to Volcanoes National Park in the Virunga Mountains.

Day 3: Begin Mount Karisimbi hike

After an early breakfast, head to the park offices for registration and meet your guides and porters. Start your hike through the forest and bamboo zones, spotting birds, butterflies, and monkeys along the way.

You may even get a rare chance to see mountain gorillas. Continue ascending to about 3,800 meters where you will set up camp for the night. Enjoy the quiet mountain evening and prepare for the final climb to the summit the next morning.

Day 4: Reach the summit and descend to Musanze

Wake up early and continue to the summit of Mount Karisimbi. From the top, you will have clear views of Lake Kivu, the Virunga Mountains, and Mount Nyiragongo if the weather allows. Spend some time at the summit before beginning your descent back through the forest.

Once you reach the base, meet your driver-guide and transfer to Musanze town for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5: Transfer to Kigali, city tour, and departure

After breakfast, drive to Kigali for a short city tour. Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, local art and craft centers, markets, and nearby religious sites. Later, your driver will take you to Kigali International Airport for your departure flight.

This marks the end of your 5-day Uganda Gorillas and Mount Karisimbi Hike safari.
