Detailed 10-Day Rwanda Gorillas, Masai Mara & Serengeti Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Drive from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park and visit Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village
Your guide will pick you up from Kigali International Airport in a comfortable 4×4 safari vehicle. Begin the 2-hour and 30-minute drive to Volcanoes National Park, known for its population of endangered mountain gorillas. Upon arrival, check into your lodge and relax while enjoying the view of the forested mountains.
Later, visit the Iby’iwacu Cultural Village to experience Rwandan culture through dance, music, and traditional attire. Take photos and interact with local people before returning to your lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Gorilla tracking in Volcanoes National Park
After an early breakfast, attend a short briefing led by park rangers about gorilla tracking rules and safety. Begin your trek through the thick bamboo forests on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes. The trek takes about six hours, depending on the gorilla location.
Once you find the gorillas, spend one hour observing and taking photos as they feed, groom, and play. Return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation. Dinner will be served in the evening before overnight stay.
Day 3: Transfer back to Kigali and flight to Arusha, Tanzania
After breakfast, check out of the lodge and drive back to Kigali, which takes about two and a half hours. Arrive at Kigali International Airport for your flight to Arusha, Tanzania. Upon arrival, your guide will transfer you to your hotel, where you will be welcomed with lunch and a refreshing rest.
In the evening, you can take a short city walk to explore Arusha’s streets or do some shopping. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4: Drive from Arusha to Ngorongoro Crater for a half-day game drive
After breakfast, drive for about four hours to Ngorongoro Crater, passing through villages and scenic countryside. Check in at your lodge and enjoy lunch while admiring the views of the crater and nearby landscapes.
In the afternoon, go for a game drive inside the crater to see wildlife such as elephants, buffaloes, black rhinos, hyenas, leopards, gazelles, and wildebeests. Return to your lodge in the evening for dinner and rest.
Day 5: Transfer to Serengeti National Park and evening game drive
Have breakfast and start your journey to Serengeti National Park, which takes about three hours. On arrival, check in at your lodge and have lunch.
In the afternoon, go for an evening game drive across the plains to see animals such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, gazelles, and zebras. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 6: Balloon safari and full-day game drive in Serengeti National Park
Start your day early with a hot air balloon safari at sunrise. From above, enjoy watching predators like lions, leopards, and hyenas as they hunt and move across the plains. Capture beautiful photos and enjoy the peaceful experience of floating over the Serengeti.
After the balloon ride, continue with a game drive in the southern Serengeti before returning to the lodge for lunch. Later in the afternoon, explore the central Serengeti to spot wildebeests, hippos, giraffes, zebras, and antelopes. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 7: Drive to Masai Mara in southern Kenya
After breakfast, depart for Masai Mara National Reserve, located in southern Kenya. The drive takes about three and a half hours through open grasslands and farmlands.
On arrival, explore the Mara Triangle area where you may see black rhinos, wildebeests, and lions. Check in at your lodge for lunch and spend the afternoon relaxing while listening to the sounds of the wild. Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.
Day 8: Full-day game drive in Masai Mara
Have breakfast early in the morning and head out for a full-day game drive. You will have the chance to see the Big Five, along with wildebeests, zebras, hyenas, and many bird species.
Continue exploring different parts of the reserve in the afternoon, enjoying the wide plains and wildlife encounters. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 9: Drive to Lake Naivasha National Park
After breakfast, drive to Lake Naivasha National Park, which takes about five hours. On arrival, check in at your lodge and relax before lunch.
In the afternoon, enjoy a game drive around the park and along the lake’s shores, where you can see hippos, crocodiles, giraffes, zebras, and waterbucks. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 10: Boat cruise and transfer to Nairobi for departure
After breakfast, go for a morning boat cruise on Lake Naivasha. Enjoy watching hippos and water birds while admiring the peaceful scenery. Take photos and relax as you end your journey.
Return to your lodge, check out, and drive to Nairobi, which takes about two hours. Arrive in time for your departure flight, marking the end of your 10-day Gorillas–Mara and Serengeti safari.
