Detailed 8-Day Rwanda Gorillas, Kenya & Tanzania Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park from Kigali, Rwanda
You will be picked up from your agreed location and transferred to Volcanoes National Park in northwestern Rwanda. This park is famous for its mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, and the Dian Fossey research site. The 3-hour road trip offers great views of Rwanda’s scenic countryside. Arrive and check in at your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Gorilla trekking adventure
Wake up early for breakfast and then drive to the park offices for a briefing. You will meet the park guides and wardens who will explain the trekking rules and safety tips. Dressed in proper trekking gear, you will follow your ranger into the forest to start the adventure.
Once you find a gorilla family, spend one hour in their presence while observing their behavior. You will learn about their feeding habits, playfulness, and family life. Remember to avoid loud noise, keep a safe distance, and avoid using flash photography. After the trek, return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Drive to Kigali, fly to Nairobi, and transfer to Masai Mara
After breakfast, drive back to Kigali and head to the airport for your flight to Nairobi, Kenya. Upon arrival, meet your driver-guide who will transfer you to Masai Mara National Reserve, home to the Big Five and the world-famous wildebeest migration. If time allows, enjoy an evening game drive before checking in at your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4: Full-day game drive in Masai Mara
After an early breakfast, set out for a full-day game drive in the Masai Mara plains. Carry your packed lunch and enjoy the open savanna filled with wildlife. Expect to see lions, elephants, leopards, buffaloes, rhinos, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, and hyenas.
If you are lucky, you may also witness animals giving birth or predators hunting. Enjoy lunch in the bush before continuing your exploration. Return to your lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 5: Drive to Serengeti and evening game drive
After breakfast, leave the Masai Mara plains and drive to Serengeti National Park through the Isebania border. At the border, meet your Tanzanian driver-guide who will take you into Serengeti.
Enjoy an enroute game drive as you enter the park, spotting elephants, buffaloes, lions, giraffes, wildebeests, and antelopes along the way. Arrive at your lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 6: Full-day Serengeti game exploration
Spend a full day exploring the endless plains of Serengeti National Park. If your visit coincides with the wildebeest migration, you will witness one of nature’s greatest spectacles as predators like crocodiles and lions hunt across the rivers and plains.
Expect to see many animals including elephants, zebras, giraffes, leopards, topis, gazelles, and wild dogs. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the park and later relax with evening tea as you watch the sunset before returning to your lodge for dinner and rest.
Day 7: Transfer to Ngorongoro Crater
After breakfast, drive to Ngorongoro Crater for another exciting wildlife experience. The crater is home to a large variety of animals, including zebras, impalas, elands, jackals, cheetahs, lions, elephants, rhinos, and hyenas.
Enjoy a 2 to 3-hour game drive before heading to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 8: Drive to Arusha with a short game drive in Lake Manyara National Park
After breakfast, drive towards Arusha with a stop at Lake Manyara National Park for a short game drive. This park is famous for its tree-climbing lions, which are only found here and in Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda.
Look out for other animals such as leopards, baboons, giraffes, bushbucks, and impalas. After your game drive, continue to Arusha and be dropped off at the airport, marking the end of your 8-day Rwanda Gorillas–Kenya and Tanzania Safari.
