Detailed 7-Day Rwanda Gorillas & Masai Mara Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Kigali and transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, meet your guide and begin your journey to Volcanoes National Park. The drive takes about two and a half hours. On arrival, check in at your lodge and relax.
Lunch will be served in the afternoon. Later, take a short walk around the lodge and enjoy views of the forest and nearby landscapes. Dinner will be served at sunset before you rest for the night.
Day 2: Gorilla tracking and Twin Lakes tour
After breakfast, head to the park headquarters for a briefing about gorilla tracking. Rangers will explain the rules and safety guidelines before you begin your trek. The tracking experience can take up to six hours depending on the movement of the gorillas.
Once you find them, spend one special hour observing the gorillas as they feed, play, and care for their young. Take photos and enjoy the moment. Return to the lodge for lunch.
In the afternoon, visit the Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo. These lakes are known for their beautiful scenery and peaceful surroundings, making them perfect for photography and relaxation. Return to the lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Drive back to Kigali and fly to Nairobi
After breakfast, check out and drive back to Kigali International Airport, about two and a half hours away. Catch your flight to Nairobi, Kenya.
On arrival in Nairobi, transfer to your hotel for lunch and relaxation. In the afternoon, you can take an optional city tour to the Karen Blixen Museum to learn about Kenya’s culture and history.
Day 4: Nairobi to Masai Mara Reserve
After breakfast, begin your drive south to Masai Mara National Reserve. The trip takes about five hours. On arrival, check in at your lodge and enjoy lunch.
Spend the afternoon relaxing at the lodge. Later, take a short guided nature walk around the area to see wildlife such as elephants, warthogs, hyenas, and baboons. Return to the lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 5: Hot air balloon safari and game drive in Masai Mara
Begin the day with breakfast and then go for a sunrise hot air balloon safari. View the Masai Mara wilderness from above and watch animals such as lions, leopards, and herds of wildebeests roaming the plains.
In the afternoon, go on a game drive through the savanna plains for more chances to see the Big Five and other wildlife. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 6: Full-day game drive in Masai Mara and Masai cultural tour
After breakfast, set out for a full-day game drive in Masai Mara. Explore different parts of the reserve, spotting animals such as zebras, giraffes, elephants, and antelopes. Return to the lodge for lunch and rest.
In the afternoon, continue your game drive and later visit a nearby Masai village. Interact with the Masai people, learn about their culture, and enjoy their traditional dances. Return to the lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 7: Drive back to Nairobi
After breakfast, check out and drive back to Nairobi. The journey takes about five hours. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to the airport for your international flight home, marking the end of your safari.
