Detailed 6-Day Rwanda Gorillas & Masai Mara Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi to Masai Mara National Reserve
Meet your driver-guide at the airport or your hotel in Nairobi for pick-up and a short briefing about the safari. Afterward, start your journey to Kenya’s most popular park, Masai Mara National Reserve.
Enjoy beautiful views of the Great Rift Valley along the way. Arrive at your lodge in the afternoon, have lunch, and later head out for a short introductory game drive. In the evening, return to your lodge or camp for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Game drives in Masai Mara National Reserve
After an early breakfast, head out for a full day of game drives across the open plains of the Mara. Depending on the season, you may witness the great wildebeest migration along the Mara River.
Look out for animals such as elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos, buffalos, zebras, wildebeests, giraffes, gazelles, and many bird species. Enjoy lunch at a picnic spot near the Mara River, then continue exploring the park in the afternoon.
Before returning to your lodge in the evening, visit a Masai village for a cultural experience. Meet the local people, learn about their traditions, and enjoy their songs and dances. Dinner and overnight at your lodge or camp.
Day 3: Transfer to Nairobi and fly to Kigali
After breakfast, check out and enjoy one last game drive as you exit the park. Drive back to Nairobi to catch your flight to Kigali, Rwanda.
On arrival in Kigali, meet your Rwandan driver-guide who will welcome you and transfer you to Volcanoes National Park. Check in at your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4: Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park and community visit
After breakfast, drive to the Kinigi Visitor Center for a short briefing about gorilla trekking rules and safety. You will then enter the forest with your ranger guide to begin the trek.
The trek can take between 2 and 6 hours, depending on where the gorillas are located. Once you find them, you will spend one full hour watching and photographing them as they go about their daily activities.
Return to the starting point and drive back to your lodge for lunch and relaxation. In the evening, visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village to experience the local culture, traditional dances, and crafts. Dinner and overnight at your lodge.
Day 5: Transfer to Kigali
After breakfast, check out and begin your drive back to Kigali. Enjoy a city tour that includes the Kigali Genocide Memorial Center, the City Tower, museums, and art galleries.
Have lunch at a local restaurant or hotel and spend the rest of the day relaxing or shopping for souvenirs before heading back to your accommodation for the night.
Day 6: Departure
Wake up early for breakfast. Depending on your flight time, you can do some last-minute souvenir shopping. Your driver will then transfer you to Kigali International Airport for your flight back home.
