Booking Gorilla Permits

The most important step in planning a self drive gorilla safari is choosing your destination and booking a gorilla permit. Without a permit, gorilla trekking is not possible. A gorilla permit is an official document that allows tourists to track mountain gorillas.

Only eight people are allowed to visit each gorilla family per day. During the dry seasons from June to August and from December to February, permits sell out quickly because these months are popular for trekking.

Tourists are advised to book permits at least three to six months in advance. Permits are booked through the Uganda Wildlife Authority for Uganda and the Rwanda Development Board for Rwanda. A gorilla permit costs USD 800 in Uganda and USD 1,500 in Rwanda.

Choosing the Right Vehicle

After securing a permit, the next step is choosing the right vehicle. A four wheel drive safari vehicle is recommended because it can handle steep and rough terrain. Roads leading to gorilla parks can be muddy and slippery, especially during the rainy season, so good ground clearance is important. It is also wise to rent a vehicle with full insurance to reduce risk during the trip.

Accommodation and Packing

Booking accommodation in the same region where trekking will take place is another key step. Accommodation options range from budget campsites to mid range and luxury eco lodges. Travelers should also prepare the right trekking gear. Essential items include waterproof hiking boots, long trousers, long sleeved shirts, gardening gloves, a rain jacket, a camera, and insect repellent.
