Detailed 12-Day Uganda Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Pick up and transfer to Murchison Falls National Park – Ziwa Rhinos
Your guide will pick you up from your hotel in Kampala. Drive northwest to Murchison Falls National Park, about 4 to 5 hours away. On the way, stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to track and observe the southern white rhinos.
Continue through Masindi, stopping for lunch before entering the park. You may spot some animals like elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, or warthogs along the way. Check in at your lodge, have dinner, and rest for the night.
Day 2: Morning game drive and afternoon boat cruise
After breakfast, go for a morning game drive in the northern sector of the park. Look out for lions, elephants, leopards, and buffaloes, four of the Big Five. You may also see birds like the Abyssinian ground hornbill and black-headed lapwing.
Return to your lodge for lunch, then take an afternoon boat cruise on the Nile River. As you move toward the base of Murchison Falls, you will see crocodiles, hippos, and elephants. Take photos of the falls before returning to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Transfer to Kibale National Park and Crater Lakes tour
After breakfast, check out and drive southwest to Kibale National Park. Stop in Fort Portal city for lunch. Visit the Ndali-Kasenda Crater Lakes to see the beautiful views and take photos. You will also enjoy views of the Rwenzori Mountains.
Continue to your lodge near Kibale Forest, check in, and have dinner. Rest for the night as you prepare for the next day’s chimpanzee trekking.
Day 4: Chimpanzee trekking and Bigodi Village visit
After breakfast, go for chimpanzee trekking. Start with a briefing by park staff, then enter the forest with a guide to find a habituated chimpanzee group. Spend an hour observing and taking photos.
Return to the lodge for lunch, then visit Bigodi Village in the afternoon. Meet local people, see their crafts, and enjoy traditional dances. You may also spot birds and primates in the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 5: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park and afternoon launch cruise
Have breakfast and drive south to Queen Elizabeth National Park. The trip takes less than two hours. Stop at the Equator crossing in Kikorongo for photos before entering the park. Check in at your lodge and have lunch.
In the afternoon, enjoy a launch cruise along the Kazinga Channel. Watch for hippos, crocodiles, and elephants along the banks. You will also see many birds and other wildlife. Return to your lodge for dinner and a peaceful night.
Day 6: Chimpanzee trek and transfer to Ishasha sector
After breakfast, go to Kyambura Gorge for a chimpanzee trek. The experience is similar to Kibale but shorter. You may also see black-and-white colobus monkeys and many birds.
Later, drive two hours to the Ishasha sector in the southern part of the park. Check in at your lodge, have lunch, and relax. Enjoy dinner and overnight stay.
Day 7: Tree-climbing lions and transfer to Rushaga sector in Bwindi
After breakfast, go for a game drive in Ishasha to look for the famous tree-climbing lions. You may also see buffaloes, warthogs, and antelopes. Take photos before continuing to the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
The drive takes 4 to 5 hours with lunch on the way. On arrival, check in at your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 8: Gorilla trek and transfer to Lake Mutanda – nature walk
Have breakfast and pack your lunch. Go to the park headquarters for a briefing before starting the gorilla trek. Follow your guide through the forest to find a habituated gorilla family. Spend one hour observing and taking photos before returning.
Drive to Lake Mutanda, about an hour away. Check in at your lodge, relax, and take a short nature walk around the lake. You will enjoy views of the Virunga Volcanoes and small islands. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 9: Golden monkey trek and Batwa trail
After breakfast, visit Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for golden monkey trekking. Attend a short briefing, then follow guides through the bamboo forest to find the monkeys. Spend about an hour watching them play and feed.
Return to your lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, join a Batwa trail experience led by a local guide. Learn about how the Batwa people lived in the forest and used plants for food and medicine. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 10: Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi – canoeing and island visit
After breakfast, drive 3 to 4 hours to Lake Bunyonyi. Check in at your lodge and have lunch. In the afternoon, take a canoe ride on the lake to see birds, insects, and the 29 small islands.
Visit one of the islands to meet local people and hear stories about their culture. Enjoy the views before returning to your lodge for dinner and rest.
Day 11: Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park and afternoon boat trip
After breakfast, drive about four hours to Lake Mburo National Park. Stop in Mbarara for lunch before continuing to your lodge. In the afternoon, go for a boat trip on the lake. You may see hippos, crocodiles, and many birds.
Enjoy the scenery and fresh air before returning to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 12: Morning game drive and return to Kampala
On the final day of your safari, have breakfast and check out. Go for a morning game drive to see zebras, giraffes, and antelopes. Later, drive back to Kampala, about five hours away, with lunch on the way.
Stop at the Equator in Kayabwe for photos and watch simple experiments that show how water moves in each hemisphere. Continue to Kampala or Entebbe International Airport, marking the end of your 12-day Uganda safari.
