Detailed 4-Day Rwanda Gorillas & Karisimbi Climbing Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Pick up and transfer to Volcanoes National Park

You will be met by your driver-guide at Kigali International Airport or your hotel in Kigali. After a short briefing, start your scenic journey to Volcanoes National Park in the northwest of Rwanda. On the way, enjoy a brief Kigali city tour with a visit to Kimironko Market, where you can buy handmade crafts and meet local artisans.

Have lunch on the way and continue your 2–3-hour drive to Volcanoes National Park, about 104 kilometers from Kigali. On arrival, check in at your lodge and relax for the rest of the day. Have dinner in the evening and spend the night preparing for your gorilla trek the next morning.

Day 2: Gorilla trekking in Bwindi

After breakfast, head to the park headquarters with your packed lunch. Before 8:00 a.m., you will be briefed by the park ranger on the rules and safety guidelines for gorilla trekking. You will then enter the forest with your guide and armed rangers to search for a habituated gorilla family.

The trek usually takes between 2 and 6 hours, depending on where the gorillas nested the previous night. Once you find them, you will have one hour to observe and photograph them as they go about their daily activities. After the trek, return to the park headquarters for debriefing and then drive back to your lodge. Spend the rest of the day relaxing, have dinner, and stay overnight.

Day 3: Hike Mount Karisimbi to 3,700 meters

After breakfast, check out of your lodge and return to the park headquarters for a briefing about the hike. Drive to the starting point near the slopes of Mount Mikeno. Your hiking guides, along with porters, cooks, and armed rangers, will accompany you.

The first part of the hike takes about 6 to 7 hours. You will stop for lunch at the base camp, located at around 3,700 meters above sea level. Enjoy the view of the forest and spot different birds and animals along the trail. Have dinner and spend the night at the camp, resting and preparing for the final hike to the summit.

Day 4: Ascend to the summit of Mount Karisimbi, descend, and return to Kigali

Wake up early for breakfast before continuing your hike to the summit. The climb to the top takes about one hour and is the most challenging part of the hike. At 4,507 meters above sea level, the summit offers wide views of the surrounding landscapes, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, and on clear days, even snow at the top. You will also see Mount Bisoke, Mount Nyiragongo, and Mount Mikeno.

After enjoying the views and taking photos, descend back to the mountain base, where you will meet your driver. Start your drive back to Kigali with lunch along the way. You will be dropped off at Kigali International Airport for your departure flight.

This marks the end of your 4-day Volcanoes National Park gorillas and Mount Karisimbi hike.
