Detailed 6-Day Rwanda Gorillas & Serengeti Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali city and transfer to Volcanoes National Park, Twin Lakes tour

After arrival in Kigali, embark on a transfer to Volcanoes National Park, which is about a two-hour drive. On the way, enjoy views of the green hills and forests. In the park area, you may spot primates such as black and white colobus monkeys and L’Hoest’s monkeys jumping through the trees.

Arrive at your lodge in time for lunch and relax for a short while. In the afternoon, visit the Twin Lakes of Ruhondo and Burera. Here, you can take photos and hike nearby hills to enjoy clear views of the lakes and the surrounding forests. At sunset, return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 2: Gorilla tracking in Volcanoes National Park and Iby’Iwacu cultural tour

After breakfast, head to the ranger station for a short briefing about the gorilla trekking experience and safety rules. After the briefing, follow your guide into the forest to begin the gorilla trek. The activity may take several hours, depending on the location of the gorillas. When you find them, spend one full hour observing and photographing them before returning to your lodge for lunch.

In the afternoon, visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village to learn about Rwandan culture. You will have the chance to taste local food, take part in traditional dances, and learn about the people’s customs and history. Return to your lodge at sunset for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Drive back to Kigali and fly to Arusha in Tanzania

After breakfast, drive back to Kigali, a journey of about two hours and twenty minutes. Continue to Kigali International Airport to catch your flight to Arusha in Tanzania. On arrival in Arusha, check in at your hotel and have lunch. Spend the rest of the day relaxing and enjoying the views of the city from your balcony. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 4: Transfer to Serengeti National Park

After an early breakfast, begin your journey to Serengeti National Park, which takes about four hours. On arrival, check in at your lodge and enjoy lunch. Spend the afternoon exploring the area around your lodge, where you may see animals such as elephants, warthogs, elands, and hyenas. In the evening, relax, have dinner, and spend the night at the lodge.

Day 5: Full-day game drive in Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, set out for a morning game drive in the vast plains of Serengeti. Watch herds of wildebeests, zebras, and antelopes as they graze, and look out for lions, leopards, hyenas, and buffaloes.

Return to your lodge for lunch, then head out again for an afternoon game drive. This will give you more chances to see animals and take photos before the sun sets. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 6: Return to Arusha and departure

After breakfast, check out and drive back to Arusha, a journey of about four and a half hours. On arrival, you will be dropped off at the airport for your departure flight back home.
