Volcanoes National Park trek overview

Volcanoes National Park is one of the most popular destinations in Africa and is home to the endangered mountain gorillas. The park is located in Musanze District in north western Rwanda. It covers an area of about 160 square kilometers and forms part of the Virunga Massif.

The park is named after the Virunga volcanoes, a chain of eight volcanoes, five of which are found in Rwanda.

Trekking in Volcanoes National Park is physically demanding because the terrain is steep and often muddy. All trekking activities in the park are managed by the Rwanda Development Board.

Gorilla trekking starts early in the morning at 7:00 am at the park headquarters in Kinigi. Park rangers brief visitors about park rules and safety guidelines. Tourists are then divided into groups of eight people, with each group assigned to one gorilla family.

The trek can last from 30 minutes to six hours, depending on where the gorillas are located. Once the gorillas are found, tourists are allowed only one hour to watch them as they interact. During this time, visitors can take photos and observe different gorilla behaviors.

Volcanoes National Park also offers golden monkey trekking, which is less demanding than gorilla trekking. This activity usually takes two to four hours and happens in the bamboo zone of the park. Golden monkeys are playful, and visitors can watch them move and feed in the trees.

Trekking is strictly controlled, and permits are required. A gorilla trekking permit in Volcanoes National Park costs USD 1,500.

The best time to visit for gorilla trekking is during the dry seasons, from June to August and from December to February. During these months, the trails are drier and less slippery.

Tourists must use proper trekking gear. Essential items include strong hiking boots, long sleeved shirts, long trousers, a rain jacket, and gloves.
