Trekking Gorillas In Peak Seasons
Choosing the peak season for gorilla trekking, usually from June to September and from December to February, offers better trekking conditions. During these months, the equatorial sun dries the forest floor, making the trails firmer and easier to walk on. This allows trekkers to move more comfortably and focus on the forest around them rather than worrying about slippery ground.
These months are also the busiest travel periods in Uganda and Rwanda. Visitors should expect many people at the park headquarters during the early morning briefings. Gorilla trekking permits must be booked early, ideally six months in advance, because demand is high and permits often sell out.
For photography, the dry season offers good conditions. There is less rain and mist, which improves light and clarity. With fewer leaves blocking the view, it becomes easier to see and photograph gorillas through the trees.
One important point to consider is that gorillas often move to higher ground during this season to look for food, especially bamboo shoots. Because of this, treks can be longer and more demanding. Hikes may last between four and seven hours, which can be harder than treks during the wet season.
Travel costs are higher during the peak season. Accommodation and safari camp prices are at their highest, and discounts are rare. While the cost of a gorilla permit stays the same, transport and lodging increase the overall budget. Many travelers still choose this time because the dry trails and clear weather make trekking easier.
Packing carefully is still important. Even in the dry season, rain can fall without warning. A light waterproof jacket is useful, and long sleeved clothing helps protect against insects and stinging plants. Strong hiking boots are also needed because the terrain can be rocky and uneven.
The peak season also makes it easier to add other activities to your trip. Clear weather supports game drives in nearby parks, where visitors may see lions, elephants, and giraffes. Boat cruises on lakes and guided village walks are also more comfortable, as muddy conditions are less common during this time.
