The best time of the year for gorilla trekking in Uganda

Seeing mountain gorillas in Uganda, either in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, is a special wildlife experience. The best time to visit is during the dry seasons, from June to August and from December to February. During these months, the weather is more stable, the skies are clearer, and the trails are firmer, which makes hiking easier.

These dry months are also the busiest travel periods. They are good for photography because there is better light and clearer views of the gorillas. However, high visitor numbers mean that gorilla permits often sell out several months in advance. Lodges can also fill up quickly, and the parks may feel busier. Careful planning is needed, and most travelers book permits and accommodation six to nine months ahead.

The rainy seasons run from March to May and from October to November. These months can still be a good option, especially for travelers on a lower budget or those who prefer fewer visitors. Rain usually falls in short, heavy showers followed by sunshine, rather than all day rain. During this time, gorillas often move to lower areas to feed on fresh bamboo shoots and other plants. This can lead to shorter trekking times compared to the dry season, when gorilla families may stay higher on the slopes.

During the rainy months, the forest becomes greener and more lively. Trails are quieter, which gives a greater sense of privacy. Many lodges offer lower prices to attract visitors, and it is sometimes possible to get permits at short notice, which is very difficult during busy months like July or August.

No matter when you travel, it is important to prepare for sudden rain, even in the driest months, because Bwindi is a true rain-forest. Essential items include strong waterproof hiking boots with good grip, a reliable rain jacket, and gardening gloves to protect your hands from stinging plants while moving through thick vegetation.

In the end, the best time for gorilla trekking depends on your personal choice. If you prefer easier walking and more predictable weather, June or January are good months. If you want fewer people and lower costs, April or November may suit you better. Whatever month you choose, meeting a silverback gorilla in the forest is an experience that stays with you long after the trek.
