Buhoma sector trekking review

Buhoma sector is found within the thick tropical forest of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It is known as the historic starting point of gorilla trekking in Uganda. The sector is located in the northern part of the park.

Many travelers consider Buhoma the best sector for gorilla trekking in Bwindi. This is because it is easy to reach and has gentler slopes compared to other sectors. Among the four sectors, Buhoma is the least demanding because it sits at a lower altitude of about 1,160 meters above sea level.

Even though Buhoma is considered easier, trekkers still need a good level of physical fitness. The forest has thick vegetation, muddy sections, and treks can take several hours depending on where the gorillas are found.

The trekking day starts early in the morning at the park headquarters. Park rangers brief visitors on the rules and safety guidelines. Tourists are then divided into groups of eight people. Each group is accompanied by armed park rangers to ensure safety during the trek.

The walk to find the gorillas can take between 30 minutes and six hours. Once the gorillas are located, visitors are allowed to spend one hour with them. This rule helps protect the gorillas and reduce stress on the families.

The best time to trek gorillas in Buhoma is during the dry seasons, from June to August and from December to February. During these months, trails are less muddy and easier to walk on.

Buhoma sector has five habituated gorilla families. These include the Mubare family, which is the oldest and first family opened for trekking in Bwindi and currently has nine members. Other families include Habinyanja with 12 members, Rushegura with 19 members, Katwe with nine members, and Muyambi with six members.

Buhoma also offers a wide range of accommodation options. Visitors can choose from budget, mid-range, and luxury lodges. Popular choices include Bwindi Neckview Lodge, Bwindi Forest Lodge, Silverback Lodge, and Orugano Bwindi Lodge.

Buhoma sector offers easier access, gentler terrain, and a well organized trekking experience, making it a strong choice for many gorilla trekking visitors.
